Héctor García Bio

Mr. Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba where he completed his education and received Master of Guitar and Master of music degrees from Peyrellade Conservatory. Upon graduation, Mr. Garcia decided to further his education by studying with the eminent musicologist-guitarist, Emilio Pujol, in Barcelona, Spain. Later, Mr. Garcia was appointed as assistant to Maestro Emilio in the master classes held annually in Cervera (Lerida). Spain. These classes were designed for advanced students and performing artists and were attended by classical guitarists from throughout the world.

Mr. Garcia has performed with such orchestras as the Havana Symphony, Los Angeles Sinfoniette, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, University of Albuquerque Chamber Orchestra in New Mexico, Dupont Consortium in Washington DC, Caspar Symphony, to name a few. He has also performed in New York’s famed Town Hall, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, and most principal cities across the country. An extensive concert tour of major European cities included Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Paris, London, Stockholm, The Hague, Amsterdam, Brussels, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and Africa.

His repertoire consists of works from the Renaissance to the modern period performed on the original instruments — vihuela, lute, Baroque guitar and guitar. Mr. Garcia has many recordings of his own and has been honored by the outstanding contemporary composer, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who wrote a guitar composition on the name of Hector Garcia. Mr. Garcia also has composed original works for the guitar entitled Four Cuban Dances, Habanera, Study in Tremolo, Lullaby, Suite, Two songs, Concerto No. 1 in D-minor for Guitar and Orchestra, Concerto No. 2 in C-major for Guitar and Orchestra, Concerto No. 3 in D-major for Guitar and Orchestra (in progress) and numerous unpublished transcriptions of works by Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and Chopin, to name a few.

He was recently honored with the Governor’s Award for excellence and Achievements in the Arts in New Mexico.
