Our dear friend Helen Tyrrell passed away this year. As a youth, Kirk met Helen at summer camp in Mendocino, CA. He picked up a lot of cooking chops from her over a few summers and beyond. As a young lady, Helen was a brilliant equestrienne. She also spent several years in Africa. This combination of life experiences inspired Kirk in his two-piano piece, "Helen ~ Tanzania Dressage" from Elemental Portraits. |

After they met, Helen and Marilyn became instant life-long friends. Apparently for Helen, this was par for the course. When she loved, she did so completely! For the record, The Unconservatory owes its existence in part to Helen's timely personal contribution as the original incorporating agent. Helen's great spirit was reflected in the love of countless family members and friends. She will be very much missed. |

Joan & Dick Brecker at home, January 23, 2003 |
We wished that we had known Richard L. Brecker for a longer time. We met Mr. Brecker at one of our performances in Vero Beach, FL. Shortly afterwards, he invited us to perform at John's Island Club where he was a member. He joined us on stage in concert for a couple numbers. In addition to his amazingly diverse and distinguished multiple careers, Mr. Brecker was an accomplished song writer, pianist and lover of music. He and his wife Joan have been long-time patrons of the arts. We are delighted to have known him as a fellow musician and friend.
