Jay Brown has been playing the Glass Harp, or Musical Glasses since April 1979 and has established himself nationally and internationally as a unique performer on this instrument. He holds a Masters Degree in Conducting from the University of Miami School of Music and is a Professor of Music and Humanities at Miami-Dade College, Kendall Campus. He performs frequently in the South Florida area. The Glass Harp consists of 52 brandy glasses attached to a table in such a way that as many as 6 notes may be sustained at a time by rubbing moistened fingers around the rims. Thus the instrument is capable of full chords of remarkable sonority. Mozart, Beethoven, Richard Strauss and other composers wrote music for a mechanical version of the instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin. Jay plays music written for Franklin's Glass Harmonica by Mozart and others and plays music arranged by him from other mediums. He has had a number of pieces written for him by composer Greg Sorcsek which include works for voice with glasses and harpsichord with glasses. Jay was a principle performer at the International Glass Music Festivals of 1983, 1985 and 1988 in Columbus and Oxford, Ohio and in Corning, New York. Jay Brown has frequently appeared on local and national television programs including NBC's Today show in January of 1982, ABC's Good Morning America and Miami's PM Magazine. Recently he appeared on an international broadcast of the Univision network to an audience of over 50 million viewers. Innovative and entertaining solo pieces performed by Jay include Claude Debussy's The Girl With the Flaxen Hair and Music from "Harry Potter," by John Williams.Contact information: Jay Brown 9831 S.W. 118th Avenue Miami, FL 33186 (305) 237-2390 |
